Endocrine system Lecture 1 to 3 Topic: Pancreatic Hormones

Hormones

Chemical signaling molecules or chemical messengers produced by glands in organisms especially multicellular and transported by the circulatory system to target distant organs to regulate the certain functions in cells and organs.

1. All hormones interact with target cells by first binding to specific receptors located either on the plasma membrane or as a cytosolic protein

2. The receptor for hormones must be linked to a component that is able to respond to thebinding of hormone with its receptor.

3. Substances that prevent the binding of the natural hormone and do not elicit a responsefrom the receptor are called antagonists.

4. All peptide hormones are synthesized as inactive “pre-pro” precursors.

5. A signal peptide must be cleaved off to activate the mature form of the hormone
